Campbell Manor

Ivy woke in darkness. The air was devoid of any breeze. There were no hooting owls, no rustle of pine needles. And it was warm, too—a stark contrast from the last two freezing nights. She curled her fingertips into the silky softness below her. Nestled in a cloud.

For a second, she wondered if she should be alarmed or comforted. Perhaps this all meant she was dead. The terrifying image of the kelpie flashed in her mind, justifying her theory.

But slowly her eyes adjusted, and she made out the silver-edged line of a piece of a large piece of furniture…then a chair…a door…

She arched her neck back and spotted a curtained window behind her and to the right. There was a thin gap letting in a tiny scrape of moonlight.

Her fingers curled into the soft fabric beneath her, felt the heavy warm layers above, the… She twisted her head left and right. Pillow. This was in a bed, not a cloud. And there was something vaguely familiar about it. The faint scent of maleness…

“Alastair?” she whispered, rolling onto her side. She coughed, her lungs feeling weak.

The spot beside her was empty. She pushed up on her elbows. “Alastair?” She coughed again.

Her memories jostled loose, she recalled the vibration of someone entering the water behind her as the kelpie dragged her under. Oh god… Had Alastair been drowned too? Maybe she really was dead and there were big comfortable beds in the afterlife. Did that mean he was here with her? Somewhere?

She sat all the way up. The blanket fell to her waist and she realized she was naked. More evidence this was the afterlife?

Spotting some clothes neatly folded on the chair, she threw back the blankets and swung her legs over the side. The bed was so unnaturally high, her feet didn’t touch the ground. She heaved her body off the edge, landing silently on a thick sheep-skin rug.

She dressed quickly in the tight stretchy pants and the soft cotton shirt with the strange word Bootylicius written on the front in tiny sparkling gemstones.

Moonlight glinted off a brass door knob and she tiptoed toward the door, cracking it open a few inches before peering down a long, dark hallway. Carpet. Wall sconces.

Several yards away, she spotted the carved cap of a newel post. The top of a stairway? Probably an exit. She needed to find Alastair. She needed to know where they were.

Stepping outside the room, she only made it two steps when the lights snapped on in the hallway and a strong arm wrapped around her waist from behind.

Her scream was cut off by a calloused hand covering her mouth and a deep male voice that vibrated in her bones. “You should be in bed.”

Ivy thrashed and kicked, but the strong arms just rode out her tirade until she exhausted herself and belatedly realized whose voice she’d heard. Her body settled, then stilled.

Alastair released his grip on her waist and uncovered her mouth, but his primal presence continued to wrap around her.
